  NetMD - Does it stand up to the hype?

  Sony's NetMD protocol uses the OpenMG Jukebox software (PC only, sorry Mac users) to manage your music files on your harddrive and interface with your portable music device - whether it be a Memory Stick/Network Walkman, Clie Handheld, or a NetMD Walkman. The reason for all of the hype around NetMD is that it finally allows users to download tracks from PC to MD at high-speed(no more single-speed MP3 recording!). The software works fairly well, and the ability to finally download music to your MD's at high speed is fantastic. However there are a few issues/limitations with the whole NetMD/OpenMG design - one is that 132kbps ATRAC3 is the highest available encoding quality, another is that transfers can only go from PC to MD, and not vice-versa. Despite some glaring limitations however, OpenMG Jukebox does a number of things very well. However, if you were hoping for NetMD to allow complete control of all of the MD's advanced editing functions via a PC interface (ie, dividing/splicing tracks, complex track editing, etc), then you may be a bit disappointed. Track dividing/combining/rearranging can be done by the software, but on the hard drive only, and not once the files have been transferred to MD.

  Overview

  For OpenMG Jukebox to transfer music files on your harddrive to MD, they must first be 'imported' to a playlist in OpenMG Jukebox, and doing so usually requires converting the audio format to Sony's proprietary, encrypted ATRAC3 format (you can leave them in their original format without converting to ATRAC3, but only for playback on your PC... if you want to transfer a track to MD, it will first need to be converted to ATRAC3 somewhere in the process). The user has a choice of 132kbps, 105kbps, and 66kbps (132 and 105 are stereo, 66 is joint-stereo). For reference, the 132kbps and 66kbps modes are identical to those used in the MDLP (MiniDisc Long Play) modes (LP2 and LP4 respectively).

  From your OpenMG Jukebox playlist, you are allowed 3 simultaneous downloads (or 'check-outs') of a song at one time. Once all 3 check-outs have been used up, the song will still exist on your harddrive, and you will still be able to play it on your computer's jukebox. However you won't be able to download it to another MD until one of the checked-out copies is checked back in. Checking-in a track will delete the song from the MD and increment the number of your available check-outs in the jukebox by one. Note that there is no way to upload a track recorded on an MD up to the harddrive at high speed (and the 'check-in' process doesn't involve any actual audio upload). This is an unfortunate limitation for those that were hoping to be able to transfer their live recordings and interviews onto their harddrive to use with other applications. Perhaps in the future...? The speed of the PC-to-MD transfer ('check-out') depends on the selected MD recording mode - 2-4x for SP (292kbps ATRAC), 16x for LP2 (132kbps ATRAC3), and 32x for LP4 (66kbps ATRAC3).

  great! CDDB can be used to label tracks prior to ripping them from CD, and those track titles are transferrend to the MD (unfortunately some users seem to be having problems with CDDB - see the bottom of this page under the glitches section). The software also lets you change the track titles on the disc, as well as the disc title itself. You can move tracks around on the disc by dragging and dropping them to the desired target location. The jukebox software will even manage your groups on the disc (create new groups, rearrange them, move tracks from one group to another, etc). Songs can also be deleted by hitting the delete key on the keyboard (or by right-clicking the song on in the window and selecting the delete option). The only thing the jukebox does not let you control is track dividing/combining. OpenMG tracks can be freely edited (divided, combined, etc), on the harddrive, but once you download a track to MD, you're stuck with it as-is. Tracks that are checked-out via the jukebox software are Track-Protected on the MD, and cannot be edited (aside from simple rename/move operations) nor be deleted.

  The OpenMG Jukebox software will only work with Sony NetMD-compatible models of MD recorders. It will not work with an R900 or R909 (or any older model). If you own one of these older models and want to transfer songs from PC to MD at high-speed, you're out of luck.

  Installing the Software

  Surprisingly, the OpenMG Jukebox software CD that comes with the Japanese model of the N1 will install in either English or in Japanese (yes, importers, you heard me right, the software is in English!), depending on the language of your OS (it seems to detect this upon installation, and chooses the language without asking the user). Some of the installation is in English, and a few parts of it are in Japanese (although the portions which are in Japanese are obvious - just keep clicking 'OK' - there really aren't any confusing choices for the user to make).

  Important -
  Note that BOTH of the above items (OpenMG Jukebox 2.2 and NetMD Driver) need to be installed, and each of the two parts requires a reboot. Remember this, since the software won't recognize your N1 unless the 2nd part ('NetMD Driver') is installed, and it is easy to forget that you still have to install the second portion, since the install window doesn't pop-up automatically after your system restarts.

  Once you install both components and open the Jukebox software, you should be able to plug the cradle into your PC's USB port, dock the MZ-N1 into the USB cradle, and be ready to go. If there is no disc in the N1, then the computer will not detect the NetMD hardware, so make sure there is a disc inside. The manual states that you may have difficulty if you plug the cradle into a USB hub (as opposed to straight to a USB port on the computer itself), but I have been using a USB hub (which is integrated into my monitor) without any problems so far.

  Early career[edit]

  Mass of the Fermenting Dregs was formed in 2002 in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, with the original all-female lineup of Natsuko Miyamoto, Chiemi Ishimoto and Reiko Gotoh. Following Reiko's departure from the band in October 2007, the band toured with the official lineup of Natsuko and Chiemi, with various musicians serving as a 'support drummer'. Their breakthrough came at the 2007 'Road to Tarbox Audition' competition held by EMI Japan, which put the band in contact with noted American record producer Dave Fridmann (The Flaming Lips, OK Go) of Tarbox Road Studios. With Fridmann producing, they recorded two tracks, I F A Surfer and Bears (ベアーズ), which appeared on their 2008 self-titled E.P. In 2010, support drummer Yoshino Tsutomu became an official member of the band, prior to the release of their major label debut album.^[2]

  

  Departure of Chiemi Ishimoto[edit]

  In October 2010, it was announced that the band's guitarist of six years, Chiemi Ishimoto, would be leaving the group after completing the band's national tour on December 11, 2010.^[3] Her leaving was due to a medical panic disorder.^[3] Ishimoto's last performance was held at the Shibuya Club Quattro.^[3] Guitarist and lead vocalist Eriko Hashimoto of the band Chatmonchy attended the performance, sharing the enthralling experience of the final performance of 'End Roll' on her official blog on her band's official website.^[4]

  Departure of Yoshino Tsutomu[edit]

  In December 2011, Yoshino Tsutomu announced that he would be leaving the group for undisclosed reasons. This left Miyamoto as the sole founding and active member of the band.

  Dissolution[edit]

  Though Natsuko Miyamoto, with the help of supporting members, continued to perform as Mass of the Fermenting Dregs through the spring of 2012, on September the 1st of the same year, she officially announced that Mass of the Fermenting Dregs would cease to exist as of that day. As a parting present, Miyamoto shared the last of the works recorded while Tsutomu was still a member. A song titled 'たんたんたん' (tantantan) was made available for download through a direct link placed within the page containing the departing letter to the fans on the official M.o.F.D. website.^[5]

  Reformation (2015–present)[edit]

  In December the M.o.F.D website started to update, deleting the departing letter on the website.^[6] Natsuko Miyamoto sent hints on Twitter about M.o.F.D, and the band was later confirmed to play on the New Year's Q2 Concert,^[7][8] thus confirming the reunion of the band. In May, 2016, the band played in three Canadian cities on the 'Next Music From Tokyo' concert tour.

  

  Related bands[edit]

  The band's sound is often compared to that of other influential Japanese post-hardcore acts, notably NUMBER GIRL (ナンバー・ガール). They are often associated with the alternative/progressive rock act 9mm Parabellum Bullet(キューミリ・パラベラム・バレット), with whom they toured in early 2009.The English version of the band's website also claims western alternative rock bands Sugar (American band), The Wedding Present, and The Smashing Pumpkins as influences on their songwriting.^[9]

  Origin of the band's name[edit]

  Natsuko explained the origin of the unusual band name in an interview with music retailer HMV: 'It doesn't have any particular meaning, we just lined up a few words that we liked.'^[10]

Interestingly, the Palmyran Trade Ships are actually working as intended—though perhaps not in the way you’d expect. Let me explain: The amount of gold that is collected by a Trade Ship is calculated by the distance it has to travel between the two docks. At a minimum distance—when the docks are essentially right next to each other—the ships will receive 7 gold. That amount then scales based on the distance traveled, up to a maximum of 75 gold for longer trips. This is a universal scale (and a universal cap) for all civilizations. In regards to the Palmyrans, they begin to receive double the amount of gold as soon as the distance traveled starts scaling *beyond* the minimum value (of 7 gold). This means that it takes half the distance to reach the maximum payout of 75 gold than any other civilization, though the total amount they can receive from any given trade is still capped at that total. It can be a bit confusing, but the Palmyrans are properly receiving double the amount up to the maximum amount allowed for Trade Ships to collect. Of course, we do not know the exact inner workings of the purge (only the TNT member who created the script knows, and they’ve been quiet about anything purge related). However, since it’s been going on for a while, we’ve been able to get some information. Most of this guide is legit, but some parts aren’t (like when I discuss the methods of creating purged pets, though I’ll include the legit ways as well.) Table of Contents I. The Basics II. In order to clear space on the servers, TNT has decided to completely delete a bunch of inactive accounts. What accounts will they purge? 3.5 extra dmg to casters. Not all accounts will be purged. Only those that have been inactive for 18+ months (1 year and a half) are eligible to be deleted. Will frozen accounts purge? The same rules apply for frozen accounts. If they were frozen 18+ months ago, they’ll purge. However, you can’t tell when they were frozen, so they’re a bit more difficult. Do they purge in a specific order? Yes, the accounts purge in alphabetical order. It goes by account, not pet name. So pet Zekehh on the account Anabananana will purge before pet Aviahsa on account Zeeesms. Another important thing is to realize how TNT does their alphabetical order. It goes: #, letter, ___. So Cutie5 will purge before cutiegirl2, which will both purge before cutie_pie_6. How long will the purge be? Given the sheer number of accounts that no one imagines will be created (like alexa21902398210), the purge goes pretty fast. But because we don’t know of these accounts, it seems to by very slow. It takes anywhere from a couple of weeks to a month to get through a letter. The purge won’t be finished until about a year from now, most likely. Has a purge like this happened before? Yes, it has. About two years ago a smaller-scale purge happened. But it was never followed as closely as this one because you couldn’t trade pets back then. So only those who were interested in real word (rw)/ real name (rn) pets created them. Why has it changed now? I don’t like RW / RN pets, why should I care? Simply put, TO TRADE. RW/RN pets are highly desired on the PC, whether its for sentimental/creative reasons. If you create a common real name, or a common real world (in its singular and most simplistic form), you can expect some really nice UC offers (and they’re legit!). Or, if BD is your thing, expect some pretty nice stats. More on the trading later, however. II. How to Find Purged Pets/Usernames How do I find good names? Well, what you consider a “good name” is relative. The fact that I had time to think of these things while the anime was introducing its enormous, generically cute ensemble cast might not speak well of how the show will fare when it runs out of surprises.
